Wheelchair ramps offer wheelchair users freedom to go to more places than ever before. There are different types of wheelchair ramps depending on the need:
* Permanent or semi-permanent wheelchair ramps usually for buildings or public access.
* Portable wheelchair ramps usually for vehicles or small obstacles such as doorway thresholds.
Modular wheelchair ramps are prefabricated and delivered disassembled, and are relatively easy to assemble. They can be an inexpensive and portable solution for your needs.

Before you buy, consider what sort of construction material would suit you. Wood is to be avoided as it will rot.
Steel is heavier than aluminum but also much less flexible, more secure and less expensive. Beware, as unprotected steel can rust and corrode. Galvanized steel is chemically coated with zinc this stops it from corroding. A texturized surface is important to prevent slippage. Galvanized steel maybe less expensive than aluminum. But the zinc coating will wear off and when it does corrosion can result. Steel can be quite slippery also.
Also ensure your ramp has a raised edge to prevent you from falling off the sides.

Is it fit for your needs?
Some ramps are designed for manual wheelchairs, others for electric wheelchairs, some for empty wheelchairs and some for chair and rider. Be sure to check the weight specifications of the ramp to make sure that you are within its tolerance. Don’t rush out and by a seemingly cheap one, the very cheapest ramps of all are just designed for someone to push an empty wheelchair up those ramps- which may not be what you require. Ensure you know what you require it for -before you set out to make a purchase.
